REC (Recreational)
This is backyard, family reunion, picnic type of volleyball where the players are just hitting it back and forth over the net any way they can. They are not concerned with proper form or using 3 hits etc. BSSC does not have a league for this level because there has not been enough interest.
AB/LI (Advanced Beginner/Low Intermediate)
At this level, players know that they are supposed to use the 3 hits allowed (pass, set & hit) each rally, but because of their skill level, they are unable to do it on a consistent basis. If there is a tough serve, they may just pass it over the net. If the setter gets a bad pass, they may bump set the ball or send it over the net. If a set isn’t perfect, hitters might tip or bump it over. Most teams are rotating and simply having whoever is in the middle front do the setting. There will be some teams toward the low intermediate level that will run a 4-2 or possibly a 6-2 offense where they use designated setters, and that setter is switching to a position on the court and always taking the second contact to set the hitters.
LI (Low Intermediate)
Teams are definitely setting each rally up with a pass, set & hit. They are more consistent at doing this than the teams in AB/LI. They are likely running an offense with a designated setter like a 5-1 or 6-2 or 4-2, and they are starting to play specific positions on the court for offense (i.e. outside (left side) hitter, middle hitter, right side hitter).
INT (Intermediate)
Teams are doing everything on a more consistent basis. Players play specific positions on BOTH offense and defense - middle, left side, right side, middle back defense etc. Teams will run plays with specific sets for each position…1’s, 2’s for the middles, 4’s & 5’s for the outsides, and maybe some back row sets.
INT/ADV (Intermediate/Advanced)
Teams are doing everything right and are working on doing specific things for their positions on the court. Hitters can hit a variety of sets. There may be some jump serving and double blocking.
ADV (Advanced)
Teams are doing everything right and as advanced as you can get. There are back row attacks, jump serves, running stacks or X's, slides, shoots etc., and double blocking.
CAPTAINS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL REGISTRATIONS, TEAM COMMUNICATIONS, PAYMENT OF LEAGUE FEES AND COLLECTION OF PAYMENTS FROM TEAMMATES.
Early Registration Discount for Teams
Team fees increase in cost 1 month prior and 2 weeks prior to the start of the league, each time going up $50. Teams signing up more than a month in advance could save $100.
League Fees & Timing
• Deposit (usually $200) must be paid at the time of registration to hold a spot in the league.
• Balance remaining of the base team fee (i.e. base team fee less the $200 deposit) will be automatically charged to the card you used for your deposit on the date the league starts. If paying by check, payment must be received by that same date or the credit card provided with the registration will be charged unless other or prior arrangements have been made. Teams that have not paid their base team fee will not be included on the schedule and are subject to forfeiture of any monies paid per the sports refund policy.
• Referee fees for leagues that have paid officials are not included in the team fees collected by BSSC, unless specifically noted. Teams are responsible for paying the referees on field prior to their game using cash or Venmo. These fees, due from each team, for each game played including playoffs, are below. Some leagues do not have paid officials and are self-officiated (i.e. players do reffing). These include dodgeball, volleyball and ultimate frisbee. Details are included in the game rules of each league.
Basketball - $50 (this includes the fee for the scorekeeper)
Field Hockey - $25
Floor Hockey - $20
Football - $20
Kickball - $15
Lacrosse - $25
Soccer (5v5, 6v6, 7v7, 8v8) - $20 (effective 5/1/23 this will be $25)
Soccer (11v11) 35 min halves- $60 (2 refs)
Soccer (11v11) 25 min halves- $50 (2 refs)
Softball - $25 for 1.25 time limit games/$20 for 1-hour time limit games
• Receipts will be emailed to you for all payments made. If your team is waitlisted, note that the “Total Paid” says zero because you have not been charged.
• Teammate's portion of the league fees. An easy way to calculate what captains should collect from each of their players is provided in the following example:
Team fee+ ref fees (# games x $ref fee) / # players = per player price.
Example: $695 + 90 = 785/12= $65 per player.
Divisions
Our leagues are typically divided by skill level when enough teams sign up. Division 1, A or Advanced being the highest. These are typically very competitive with ex college players being the norm. The level decreases in order with Division 3, D, or Recreational being our most relaxed levels of play. When registering online, team captains should complete the “Division Requested,” “Last Division Played,” and “Why you are registering for this division.” BSSC will make the final decision on the division assignment based on what is best for all teams in the league.
Rules, Policies and Procedures
The Sports Program Managers may communicate by email from time to time with the captains and/or players of the league. Also, at any time, players may refer to the "League Info" tab of the league for important rules and policies. The team captain is responsible for knowing all league information and adhering to procedures, timelines, rules and policies.
Registration for Returning Teams - This is information for teams currently playing in the league for which you are registering.
Teams who are participating in a league that has multiple sessions will have a spot reserved for them up to 1 month prior to the next league start date. They will be sent a password with which to submit a registration form and pay their deposit. Once that date passes, the league opens to new teams and your “reserved” spot will be lost.
The entire team fee ($200 deposit due upon registration, balance due prior to start date) is the responsibility of the captain. Payments from captains will be accepted in the form of cash, check, and credit card (Mastercard and Visa). If you are paying by check, your team space is not guaranteed until we have check in hand, along with a registration form which MUST include a credit card number.
Individual payments for a team will not be accepted, unless collected by the captain and all paid together via one cash, check or credit card payment. Individuals calling to pay their portion of a team fee will not be taken.
We strongly recommend collecting from your teammates prior to the league start so that you have commitments and do not have to front all of the fees.
Registration for New Teams - This is information for teams not currently playing in the league for which you are registering.
If a league is open, a captain may register at any time by submitting an online registration and deposit. If a league is only open to returning teams (i.e. leagues that are recurring often are closed to new registrations until approximately one month prior to the next league start date to give current teams an opportunity to renew), a new captain can pre-register by filling out the contact form on the online registration page.
If accepted into the league, the entire team fee ($200 deposit due upon registration, balance due prior to start date) is the responsibility of the captain.
If the league reaches capacity, your team will be placed on a waitlist until a spot becomes available.
Submitting Team Rosters
Once you register and pay your deposit, you will be given a link to update your roster on the checkout confirmation page. If you choose to update your roster at a later date, you can simply login to your personal BSSC account on BSSC.com (top-right corner) and scroll down to "My Activities." You can then click on "Roster" for the current league and add/remove players as needed. All players on your team MUST appear on the roster. Once you input your players, you’ll see each current waiver status. Anyone who hasn't submitted a waiver must have one sent to them, you can use the functionality on this page to do so.
Our advice is to request this information from your teammates as soon as possible. Please take care with spelling and accuracy in order to avoid incorrect non-member fee assessments. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO REVIEW ROSTER FOR ERRORS.
• Email address. You will be prompted to enter an email and search. If the player is already in the system, it will auto-fill the fields.
• If the player is not in the system, you will be prompted to add:
a) First and last name
b) Birth date
c) Phone number
d) Gender
Roster Deadlines
Rosters must be completed prior to the first game of the season. You may make changes up to the final week of play at which point the rosters freeze, and only rostered players may play in any playoff games. Failure to submit a complete roster may result in your team may not be allowed to participate in playoffs and/or the team being removed from the league. All teams, including company/corporate teams must provide a roster with valid player information.
Team Supplies
Due to the size of some leagues in softball and 11v11 soccer, teams are occasionally required to pick up their team supplies (jerseys, ball, roster, etc.) at the BSSC office at 135 Beaver St, suite 210, Waltham, MA; The program manager will email the team captains the available date and time of the pickup typically 2-7 days prior to league start.
If an office pickup is not noted, captains should check in with the BSSC representative on-site before their game on the first night of play.
Most volleyball leagues fill with full teams, but if you are an individual looking to play, there are 3 ways to get on a volleyball team:
1. If there is enough interest from individuals (at least 3 women and 5 men of the appropriate skill level) and there is a team opening, we will make up a team of individuals. Frequently, teams of individuals are formed for the Advanced Beginner/Low Intermediate leagues; sometimes for Low Intermediate leagues; and occasionally for Intermediate leagues. However, it is very rare for Int/Adv or Advanced levels.
2. Go on our “free agents” list. Captains who are returning to the league sometimes need to add a couple of people to their team. Please provide the following information, which will be provided to interested captains:
• The league(s) (i.e. level, location and night) that you are looking to play in. If you aren't sure what level you fall into, see “Explanation of Volleyball Levels.”
• Phone number
• Email address
• Your background in volleyball (i.e. played in high school or college or intramurals, played in other leagues, 6’5” hitter or setter, good passer, server etc.).. anything that will “sell” you to a team.
If your skills fit the needs of an inquiring captain, they will then contact you and ask you to come “try out” for their team. If you get on a team, you will pay the captain your portion of the team fee and any non-member fees.
3. Just show up to the first night of any league you want to play in. Captains know that there may be walk-ons. If they need to pick up a player, they will sometimes wait to see who shows up that first night. They have 3 weeks to finalize their rosters. If no one shows up, or no one who fits their needs, they then usually call and ask for the “free agents” list.
We build each session's schedule by hand with careful consideration to producing a balanced and fair schedule for every team in the league. We do our best to accommodate special requests, but cannot guarantee that they will be met.
The playing schedule for each night is available to captains upon arrival at the facility.
Playoff schedules are usually posted a few days after the regular season has ended. Note that the eligibility for playoffs varies by league and session. Sometimes, all teams are eligible for playoff games, but in some cases they are not. Once the final standings have been updated, a schedule for playoff matches will be published.
While we do our best to adhere to published schedules, please be aware that schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances at fields and facilities. Cancelled games may cause the season to extend beyond the initially posted end date and/or change playoff dates. We strongly recommend that you build flexibility into your rosters to accommodate possible changes.

For all activities, you are responsible to judge your own ability to participate in an activity based on your own physical capabilities and endurance, the weather, conditions, and anything else pertaining to the activity. If there is a BSSC escort or on-site representative, their only responsibility is to ascertain to the best of their abilities that the features and logistics of the activity are appropriately carried out. Their participation does not indicate that the activity is safe or suitable for you.
Boston Ski & Sports Club also reserves the right to disallow your participation if you do not have the required safety gear. Refer to specific leagues and activities for further detail.
There are 3 ways to see if activities are canceled. We will always make an effort to give you a few hours notice, but that may not always be possible, so it is the participant’s responsibility to check these 3 sources.

For outdoor activities, cancellations depend upon the playability of a field, not whether it is raining. Decisions are usually made after 4pm on weekdays and 2-3 hours in advance on weekends. Because conditions & weather can change, updates are made as necessary, and we suggest you check before heading out to your activity. Games scheduled for synthetic grass fields are usually never cancelled unless there is thunder & lightning. In case of lightning near a field, games will be stopped immediately and then resumed when safe...this may cause a delay in the schedule or require some or all games to be cancelled depending on the duration of lightning. Activities may also be cancelled per the directive of the field/venue owner if they feel damage may be done to the field by playing on it.
During the winter months, occasionally activities may be cancelled due to snow. Some sports leagues use school facilities which may be closed if school was cancelled. However, some schools allow us to play as long as the parking lot is cleared. Other facilities are always open, and we will only cancel if overall conditions are too problematic. We will usually not cancel in advance based on a forecast of snow, but wait until actual accumulation. Similarly, if it is snowing in the morning or early afternoon, but is due to stop, we will wait until 4 or 5pm to see if we can play.
All league participants, officials, and spectators are expected to treat every facility with respect. Please do not abuse the facility, its staff, or anyone else within the facility, by leaving trash, swearing, or any other acts that may be deemed disrespectful. In addition to BSSC’s league rules, all are also subject to the rules of conduct which may exist for the facility. Failure to comply may result in expulsion from the league or other disciplinary actions as defined in the code of conduct.
For all sports activities, alcohol is strictly prohibited. Violation of this rule jeopardizes the use of the field for the entire league. Players cannot consume alcohol on any part of league premises, including parking lots, before or after a game, and no player will be allowed to compete if the game official feels that a player has been drinking before the game. The offending player(s) will be removed from the game and face further disciplinary action per the code of conduct.
