A BSSC Engagement – Congrats to Alexa & Ryan

With 50,000+ people in the Greater Boston area skiing and playing sports with BSSC annually, and nearly 50 years in business, we've seen our fair share of weddings! That being said, we’re super excited to welcome our newest engaged couple, Alexa Mislitski and Ryan Poulin!

WHAT BROUGHT EACH OF YOU TO BSSC, AND TO YOUR SOCCER LEAGUE?

Meet Alexa, Age 27; Hails from Carlisle, Pennsylvania
Alexa:  I moved to Boston in 2011 to pursue law school & to be close to my only sister, Kristen. She immediately convinced me to join BSSC with her so we could continue playing soccer and meet new people. We joined as two solo players and got stuck on a team with all guys, which was named “Between the Legs” (the co-captains happened to live a few doors down from me so we hitched rides to games with them---very ironic!).

Meet Ryan, Age 29; Hails from Hampstead, New Hampshire
Ryan: A friend of mine started a coed team and asked if I wanted in... This was back in 2012, I believe. It was outdoor in Newton and our team was good, so we kept it going with indoor. However, 2 of our 3 girls left last minute so we asked BSSC if they could help. Game 1, Alexa and her sister show up.

The coin toss...
Alexa: I showed up to the first game and was introduced to many single guys, Ryan being one of them. I had a boyfriend at the time and wasn’t super into Ryan, but the more I hung out with the team, the better friends he and I became.

The play of the game...
Ryan: Minutes into the game, I accidentally ran into her. We became friends after that. Actually, she didn't like me at first… I was friends with her sister and she told Alexa that I wasn't so bad. Then we became close!

DID THE TEAM PLAY INTO YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

Ryan: Our soccer team became pretty close, especially over that next summer in 2013. We went on a weekend trip to Penn State (her sister’s alma mater) in the fall and that's when I said to myself that it was time to make my move out of the friend zone because I was really into her. I made my move the night her sister was engaged while we were all out celebrating.

Alexa: My sister & I ended up spending a lot of time with our teammates. We had parties in the North End, held bocce and ladder golf tournaments in the summer months, went to the beach together, celebrated birthdays, had "family dinners" at each other's apartments, etc. There wasn't one person on the team that I didn't want to hang out with outside of BSSC.

The engagement...
Picture it: Labor Day Weekend, 2015. Alexa's parents flew into Boston. Ryan's parents drove down from NH and his siblings joined the festivities. Everyone hid at Alexa’s sister Kristen’s apartment next door. Almost exactly four years after meeting at their first BSSC soccer game, Ryan proposed on September 4, 2015 in the park in the North End in front of both of families. (Kristen was one of the first to know about the proposal and secretly helped the future groom customize the ring.)  Celebrations lasted throughout the weekend!

LOTS OF PEOPLE LAMENT THE DIFFICULTY IN MEETING PEOPLE, ONLINE DATING, AND THE LIKE.  DO YOU THINK ORGANIZATIONS LIKE BSSC PROMOTE FINDING FRIENDS AND/OR LOVE THE "OLD FASHIONED" WAY?

Ryan: BSSC is a great way to meet a new face or even group of friends. From this league, my branches of friends grew in several different directions. One friendship just happened to turn into the love of my life.

Please hold for a moment while we marinate in the cuteness of that last line...

Alexa: I understand the resistance to online dating, and if you're going to insist on meeting someone organically, BSSC is the perfect place to start! Even if you don't meet "the one", you’ll undoubtedly make new friends. All of the people who join BSSC have a common interest, meaning that you're already one step ahead of the rest in terms of finding someone compatible.  Plus, meeting a teammate in a group setting is a hell of a lot less awkward than trying to pick someone up at a bar - this really has become a matchmaking sport!

Any plans yet?
No plans yet, but not to worry - this game won’t go into overtime! The lovebirds are in the process of building a house, so wedding plans are in a timeout until the house is finished. However, one thing is for sure, there will definitely be a lot of BSSC players in attendance when the time comes!
