Deciding to sign up for an adult basketball league is endlessly beneficial. Not only will you be able to stay in shape and flex your competitive muscles, but you’ll also be able to meet new people and expand your social circle. To get the most out of your league, read through the tips below to make sure you’re ready for your first game.
#1 – Build Speed and Endurance through Exercise
Your ability to run up and down the court for the full length of a game – and do so quickly – will help determine your proficiency as a basketball player. If you are concerned about your abilities, one of the best ways to prepare is by jogging every day for a few weeks before the league starts. Mixing in some sprint work is ideal, too, since it will allow you to build your running endurance. If jogging is beyond your level of skill, alternate between power walking and jogging until you can jog your entire route – at least three or four minutes.
#2 – Practice Makes Perfect
Attach a basketball hoop to your garage or find a local gym with a court, and practice making shots every day until the league starts. Try for 10 foul shots or 10 lay-ups in a row, run and dribble, then try for 10 more foul shots and 10 more lay-ups. This will help you become more comfortable with the different types of shots you will take during your games.
#3 – Shoot from All Over the Court
If you’re practicing with a partner, have them stand beside the basket while you take shots from every possible point on the court. Try two-point and three-point shots from the sides and the center point, and from every location in between. Ask your partner to retrieve the ball and toss it back to you while you move between shots. If you want, you can even take a few shots from the center line.
#4 –Passing with a Partner
If you have a partner, work on passing the ball back and forth with control as you move up and down the court. Run different drills and try different types of passing up and down the court to build your skill set. Bring in a third to defend you and your partner as you try to drive to the basket to simulate a real game feel. If you don’t have a partner, you can pass to a wall and pay attention to your form.
While practicing basketball skills is important, you should also take the time to keep your body in shape. Having good endurance as well as building strength will help you become a good basketball player, so take some time out of your day to lift weights or use bodyweight resistance training. Stretching and Yoga can help with flexibility, as well, so add this to the mix as you prepare yourself for playing in an adult basketball league.
