Cornhole is a game that got its start in the Midwest and gradually spread outward through the rest of the country. In fact, you can even play social cornhole in Boston. Thanks to Boston Ski and Sports Club’s 4th Annual Summer Cornhole Classic, you can give it a try at the Lawn on D on Sunday, August 25.
What Is Cornhole?
Cornhole is a relatively simple sport that involves tossing small bags filled with dried corn at a wooden target with one or more holes at one end. Though numerous variants of cornhole can be found across the country, the game most commonly played in tournaments has only one hole in the platform. Each player gets three opportunities per turn to toss the bag through the hole, with scoring based on where they land. When the bag falls through the hole, the player is awarded three points; if it stays on the platform but does not fall through the hole, it is worth one point, instead. The first player or team of tossers with 21 points wins.
Social vs. Competitive Cornhole
Cornhole games can be social or competitive, and BSSC’s Cornhole Classic has both! The tournament offers a 48 team social bracket and a 16 team competitive bracket for a total of 64 teams. The goal is to come out to the Lawn on D, relax, and hang out while you enjoy a cold drink from the outdoor bar. You can even participate in other activities such as ping-pong, bocce ball, and plenty more. Prizes for cornhole tournament winners include swag, free access to sports leagues, and even Red Sox tickets. Competitive cornhole awards prizes of higher value and is geared more toward experienced and advanced players.
Why Should You Play Cornhole?
Cornhole is a great activity for people who may enjoy social gatherings but might not be into participating in more physical sports like volleyball or basketball. Cornhole is an easy game to play and requires very little physical prowess, aside from the ability to toss a bag several feet into a hole. The rules are easy to master, and that means it’s perfect for anyone who just wants to chill out and relax with a beer in hand while they make some new friends or socialize with existing friends.
How to Get Registered
Held in collaboration with Harpoon and Boston Cornhole, members and non-members alike are encouraged to register early for the Cornhole Classic. A single team fee to BSSC covers a two-person team, so be sure to bring a friend. The scoring will be provided by Boston Cornhole and will follow the double elimination standard. If you want to play, be sure to register now since spots will go quickly and only 48 teams can participate.
If you’re excited about spending a day outside enjoying all the amazing weather that summer has to offer, find a friend and register for the Summer Cornhole Classic social tournament taking place on Sunday, August 25 at the Lawn on D. It’s a great way to enjoy yourself and make some new friends along the way.
