Start-Ups and Techies Score & Ski with BSSC

Boston Ski & Sports Club has long been known for the amazing connections it makes between members who ski, play sports or party together. But in an era where corporate culture and work/life balance is more important than ever for competitive recruiting, BSSC has seen a trend towards many cutting edge Boston area start-ups and tech companies reaping major benefits on and off the field and slopes with BSSC recreational sports leagues and ski trips.

Google, Wayfair, Propel Marketing, LogMeIn and Tank Design are just a few of the Boston-area companies that are playing and skiing with BSSC.

“The BSSC ski trip we took last year is the new favorite event,” says David Wells of Tank Design, which added it to the roster of social events like annual Halloween and Christmas parties, F1 Racing and Red Sox games. “People are already asking when we’re going to do it again.”

The Tank Design ski trip to Loon Mountain came about last winter when they discovered through water cooler conversation that a large number of the 50-person Boston office were avid skiers. The idea to ski together came to fruition, David says, with just a couple of quick phone calls and emails.

“It was awesome,” says David. “It’s an affordable option and we’ve already scheduled a duplicate trip for this winter.”

Tank Design’s private ski trip through BSSC bused 35 people up to Loon Mountain and provided ski lessons and equipment, plus a catered lunch at Deli with a beautiful view of the mountain. Most importantly, everything about the trip was taken care of when the team arrived.

But it’s not just ski trips that have local companies buzzing. The ritual of getting together on a weekly basis to play recreational sports has brought huge benefits to company culture.

Propel Marketing has a seasonal kickball team with BSSC, with a weekly signup sheet that opens up the team to anyone who’d like to play. When looking at their options for recreational sports leagues, they chose BSSC because they provided a huge number of leagues and flexible schedules.

“Everyone from upper management to entry level positions participates,” says Sales Engineer John Reardon. “It’s great face time and a fun way to get people involved—we’ve had an overwhelming number of people in different departments playing this year.”

With just over 250 employees and continuing to grow, Propel Marketing employees value the opportunity to get out of the office with colleagues.

“We’re growing, but we definitely still have a startup culture,” says Rebecca Mersiowsky, PR and Marketing Specialist at Propel Marketing. “We have Beer Fridays, ping pong—kickball is another addition to that. It’s unique because it’s not super competitive—everyone, from the CEO to our interns, can get involved and have a good time outside of the office."

At e-commerce giant Wayfair, soccer is the game to play. Business Intelligence Analyst Furkan Celik took the initiative to put together a soccer league with colleagues, and currently has three corporate teams with a total of 40 people playing.

“I was hearing from a lot of folks at Wayfair that they’d really like to play in a company league,” says Furkan. “Many, including me, had former experiences with BSSC—it was the only league that everyone had positive feedback about. The BSSC experience seemed the best among all the options.”

Wayfair’s three teams compete in BSSC’s Fenway leagues, just a short distance from Wayfair’s office in Copley Square. But competing gives them more than just a chance to show off their soccer skills.

“I have always been a strong believer in the importance of having a social event outside work for encouraging a healthy work environment,” says Furkan. “I’m glad that it’s helped people from different departments to get to know one another. Many of us made good friends from different departments at different seniority levels—and I can say that this is one of the best outcomes of playing on a league together.”
