Adult Social Sports in the Olympics and a Look Ahead to 2028

Team sports in the Olympics, new and returning to gloryAs we approach the end of the 2024 Summer Games, we eagerly anticipate the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced some exciting additions to the roster of events, including softball, lacrosse, and flag football. These sports not only bring new energy and competitive spirit to the Games but also reflect the growing diversity and inclusiveness of the Olympic movement. They also represent three of Boston Ski & Sports Club’s (BSSC) fastest-growing sports. Here’s a closer look at what to expect from these thrilling new additions, with additional highlights on summer Olympic staples like basketball and soccer.

Softball: A Return to the Games

Softball is continuing its comeback to the Olympics after a brief hiatus. First included in the 1996 Games in Atlanta, it was dropped after 2008 in Beijing, returned to Tokyo in 2020, and will again return to Los Angeles in 2028. The sport, which is a variant of baseball with a larger ball and underhand pitching, is incredibly popular in the United States, Japan, and many other countries. With the sport’s return, there’s a great opportunity to showcase its global appeal and attract a new generation of enthusiasts. Join a BSSC softball league here.

Lacrosse: A Historic Comeback

Lacrosse is also returning to the Olympics in 2028 since its only two Olympic appearances were in 1904 and 1908 when Canadians took the gold. Originating from indigenous cultures in North America, lacrosse has evolved into a fast-paced and highly strategic team sport played on both field and indoor surfaces.

In the Olympics, lacrosse will feature the traditional field version, which involves two teams of 10 players each. The inclusion of lacrosse in the Olympic Games is a testament to its growing international presence and the sport’s rich cultural heritage. Check out our BSSC lacrosse offerings here!

Flag Football: A New Frontier

Flag football, a non-contact version of American football, is another exciting addition to the 2028 Olympic roster. Unlike traditional football, where players tackle each other, flag football involves pulling a flag from the ball carrier’s belt to stop the play. This version of the sport emphasizes speed, agility, and strategy, making it accessible and exciting for players of all ages and skill levels. Flag football’s inclusion in the Olympics is a nod to its increasing popularity and the sport’s ability to engage a wide audience. With so many NFL players hailing from the United States, the USA Flag Football team will be a heavy favorite to win the gold in L.A., much like their basketball counterparts.

Basketball: American Dominance

Team USA’s performance in the 2024 Olympics has solidified its legacy as the dominant force in international basketball. The men’s and women’s teams are a combined 7-0 so far in Paris, with both teams having advanced to the semifinals. Fresh off an NBA title, Boston’s own Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Jrue Holiday have continued their strong play with Team USA. Both the men’s and women’s teams are expected to reach the podium once again. USA Women’s Basketball seeks its 8th straight gold medal, while the Men’s team fights for its 5th consecutive gold. As USA basketball looks towards future competitions, including the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, the continued development of emerging talent will be a key factor in maintaining their success. Soccer: A Worldwide Phenomenon

The addition of softball, lacrosse, and flag football to the 2028 Olympic Games reflects the IOC’s commitment to evolving the Olympic program to include a diverse range of sports that resonate with global audiences. No sport has a greater worldwide scope than soccer.

Soccer’s presence in the Olympics beautifully reflects the sport’s global diversity. Its simplicity is part of what makes it so universally beloved. All you need is a ball and a bit of space, making it accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. This accessibility is reflected in the Olympics, where teams from every corner of the globe come together to compete, each bringing their unique style and flair to the field.

The Olympic Games represent a platform for emerging soccer nations to make their mark. Teams from nations such as the Dominican Republic, Uzbekistan, and Zambia have demonstrated soccer’s increasing global reach, highlighting the sport’s expanding influence. Whether it’s coed, men’s, or women’s soccer, BSSC has the leagues to suit your playing needs.
